WINTER RUNNING: HOW TO TRAIN SAFELY IN COLD WEATHER

WINTER RUNNING: HOW TO TRAIN SAFELY IN COLD WEATHER

Just think about it: during a single run you take 10,000 to 20,000 steps. On a slippery road, every step is an enormous stress on your musculoskeletal system. Instead of propelling you forward, your muscles are desperately trying to stabilize your body.

This is especially critical for those preparing for early spring races who need to build volume right now. "Polishing" ice is not only unpleasant but also dangerous for tendons and ligaments. I am speaking from experience: I suffered a serious calf muscle injury because of such conditions and went through a long rehabilitation.

Where is the risk threshold? If your weekly volume is under 20 km at an easy pace, you can somewhat get away with slippery surfaces (though you still should not). But if you are running 40 km+ per week, you absolutely must protect yourself.

What to do? 7 ways to stay safe:

  • Fly to a warm-weather training camp. This is the ideal option for quality preparation. By the way, I run a running camp in Cyprus in February and March. It is dry, warm, and perfect for training (for details, feel free to send me a direct message).
  • Gear up. Buy specialized running shoes with metal studs or clip-on ice grips for your regular shoes.
  • Indoor track. If your city has one, do not ignore this option.
  • Cross-country skiing. An excellent alternative for building functional endurance without impact loading.
  • Cross-training. Replace a dangerous outdoor run with a pool session or a stationary bike workout.
  • Treadmill. Yes, it is a bit boring, but it is safe and effective for intervals.
  • Staircase. If there is no indoor track, every neighborhood has high-rise buildings. Stair running is a great way to build leg strength. Important note: run up, but take the elevator or walk down to protect your knees.

And remember: many training goals can be accomplished at the gym by combining treadmill work with strength training.

Take care of yourself! Health should always come first \u2014 not those Ironman medals.
